UNDP AT THE WORLD URBAN FORUM (WUF9) 2018

February 7, 2018

The Ninth Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF9) - UNDP Participation

There is wide consensus that development challenges will become increasingly more concentrated and acute in cities and areas with rapid urbanization.

While urbanization provides opportunities to citizens and enhances economic aspects of countries, rapid and unregulated urbanization poses multiple challenges: cities produce more than 70 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and use 80 percent of the world’s energy.

To make rapid urbanizing cities more sustainable and resilient, UNDP has been working on various social, economic and environmental aspects in urban areas such as Governance, Poverty, Inequality, Gender Issues, Disaster Risk Reduction, and Climate Change Adaptation under the broader remit of Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda.

Additionally, UNDP has developed and is implementing its Sustainable Urbanization Strategy, which was launched at Habitat III.
